NATURAL STONES

Natural stone is an environmentally friendly natural product, with a unique and lively appearance. It is also a functional and durable material that is suitable for many inside and outside applications. The crust on which we live exist of an important part of natural stones. Therefore the stock is virtually inexhaustible and natural stone is won in almost all countries. The formation of the crust and therefore the formation of natural stones is a complex geological process, which continues every day. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are the most tangible evidence. This geological process determines the appearance and characteristics of natural stone. Because no place in the world is going through the same geological development, no natural stone is the same.

Natural stone is formed from cooled liquid rock (magma or lava), or sediment (sand, clay, lime) under pressure (often in combination with high temperatures) that is solidified. Natural stone is the main component of the crust on which we live. The formation of the crust and thus natural stones is a continuous geologically process, as old as the earth itself. Of the available stone in the earth's crust, only one part is to economic gain and use. Nevertheless, there are thousands of natural stones. Stones with a similar composition and history are classified in groups. To one group (such as marble or granite) hundreds of stones can be classified. The main groups of the scheme are discussed below.

Pluton

Pluton are gradually cooled and formed under high, constant pressure. This results in coarse grained rocks, with clearly observable crystals. Appearance and composition of pluton are regular, but each stone can vary greatly in appearance. This group covers the granite and gabbros

Volcanic rock

Magma can come from the interior of the earth to the surface, which is called lava. After a volcanic eruption, the lava cools quickly and solidified. These rocks contain little or no crystals. Bubble Inclusions may occur. Volcanic rock is usually of uniform appearance and composition. This group covers the trachyte and basalt.

Sedimentary Rocks

Sedimentary rocks are formed by the deposition of sediment in rivers and seas. There are two types: deposition rocks and precipitation rocks.

Sedimentary rock
Deposition rocks are formed by the deposition of clay, sandstone or limestone layers that hardens. This clay or sand may come from eroded stone, the lime scale of crustaceans, coral and such. To the deposition rocks appertain clay stone, sandstone and some limestone (see also precipitation rocks). Clay stones are formed from clay. They are not used in the natural stone industry, but form the basis for slate. Sandstone is formed from sand and has a porous structure. Limestone is formed from lime. The fossils are often found in these rocks, telling us something about the origin of the lime.

Precipitation Rocks

Precipitation rocks are formed by the precipitation of lime from water saturated with lime. Some limestone belongs to this group (see also sedimentary rock). In general, the appearance of limestone is created from the fine precipitate layers. This type of limestone may contain fossils.

Metamorphic rocks

These are sometimes called transformation rocks caused by movements in the earth crust. This movements forms mountains. During this process the already formed volcanic rock or sedimentary rocks are subjected to extreme pressures, possibly combined with high temperatures. Thus these rocks undergo a transformation or metamorphosis. This changes both the appearance and properties. Some examples of metamorphoses: limestone, marble, clay stone, slate, sandstone, Quartzite’s, granite, gneiss
